Psychological safety in the workplace is the sense of security employees have when they feel safe enough to express their views and Speak Up without fear of repercussion.
We regularly see Engagement survey results list this in the top 5 most important areas for employees, in addition to Trust at an individual level. This is a key dynamic organisations need to get right if they are to drive high performance, innovation and creativity for long term success.
Feeling safe to express your own opinion, ask questions or respectfully challenge a colleague is not level specific and anyone regardless of position or background can Speak Up without fear of judgment.
Enabling colleagues to make mistakes or ask silly questions in a safe environment enables deeper learning to take place it creates resilience and provides regular opportunity to feedback to one another so it becomes a cultural norm.
"IF THERE WAS EVER A TIME FOR COMPANIES TO START THINKING SERIOUSLY ABOUT PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY, IT' S NOW"
Its not just about Leadership
It is likely as a Leader you don't have all the answers. By sharing that you don't will help others to open up and create opportunity to collectively explore solutions together.
By building collective responsibility will create a culture of openess and respect that will build stronger relationships. Make having a voice a strategic intention with leaders and managers role modelling behaviours.
With Hybrid teams it is important to adopt an approach to Psychological safety by having clear communication channels. How are managers and colleagues checking in? Be conscious of how people want to work, some are quite happy to be left alone and don't want social interaction others may feel isolated, anxious and left out. Find out how colleagues want to work with one another and eliminate any fears that exist.
SPOTLIGHT BUSINESS
One company doing this really well is HubSpot. Pre-pandemic they had about 300 employees working remotely. Every Monday they ask employees to share a Rose, one thing that went really well the previous week, a Bud, one thing they are looking forward to this week and a Thorn, one thing that didn't go so well last week but they learned what to do differently nest time. Employees are also encouraged to acknowledge emails with a quick emoji, like a thumbs up, sort of giving a digital nod to reassure colleagues that a message has been seen.
There's a lot to think about when it comes to finding the right solutions and services that truly support Trust and Psychological safety within the workplace. So we would rather you talk to us honestly about whats going on for you and your business. We can then create a bespoke solution that really adds value to your people services, reassuring colleagues that you are not only listening but will take action when you hear things aren't quite right.

All organisations need to continually evolve and learn. Particularly when things go wrong, we need to make sure that lessons are learnt, and things are improved. Regardless of whether you work in a high-risk environment, you need staff to be honest about things that concern them that can prevent further injury or harm.
The answer is you don't as long as you have the framework and a mature organisational culture that is needed to allow colleagues to raise concerns without fear of repercussion. You can commission us to develop a bespoke offering and OD intervention that can be adopted by your organisation if you can guarantee psychological safety for you employees.
We have developed a maturity matrix that can measure phycological safety in the workplace and map the effectiveness of any interventions you have currently active. This then produces a heatmap for you to evaluate any gaps in provision which allows you to focus the resources required and keeps your offering agile according to the needs of your people.
There is a level of preparedness that needs to take place in order for the service to bring the most value to both individuals and the organisation as a whole.
