Guessing the answer may very well be err or even no. If you hesitated in your response then you definitely need to do some work around this in your business.
Why, isn't it all a bit out there?
Ask yourself this, do you....
- a) bounce out of bed in the morning and think wow aren't I lucky another great day at doing what I really love, meeting new people, motivating my team, getting everything done on my to do list and looking forward to all the stuff I don't even know I'll be doing, its going to be great!
- b) I need another 9 minutes snooze time to mentally prepare for yet another long and torturous day at work.
What ever your answer I'm pretty sure you would rather everyone you work with was an A?
Is it enough for people to just turn up in body and not bring their whole self to work?
There is tons of research that shows happy people are more productive and those people have to share a values and belief system aligned to your corporate values, they are your DNA. I bet you've spent hours, days even deciding on a vision, mission and values statement for your organisation, possibly even disagreed on one particular word?
And for most businesses, that's where it ends, a nice shiny piece of paper that gets plastered on a motivational poster on the way to the staff kitchen or worse the clocking in machine.
The problem is that we all have our own values and belief systems, your probably not weaving it into your recruitment and attraction strategy, and I can guarantee it doesn't feature in your policies. Then of course how do you bring it into your everyday language, behaviours and live the values.
Think of it this way💡
You employ Brian (sorry in advance if your name is Brian, it just popped into my head) he turns up for work every day, does the job adequately but he is one of life's 'mood hoovers'.
You've sent him on various training courses to 'help him' but in reality, you know the team avoid him and for a quiet life just agree when he says things like 'no point in changing something that ain't broken' or 'what do management know they're not doing the job'. Brian is quite vocal but can't see the impact on others and you hope that when there is a team meeting, he has the day off.
Brian is working to a different values system, its not wrong, but isn't aligned, what if you could reframe his attitude? Would that be worth its weight in gold?
If you're thinking how much this is going to cost, sounds expensive. Ask yourself how much have you lost in productivity, what negative strategies do you or others put in place (think of the lost energy here), did someone leave because of Brian, has it caused any conflicts, how much management time have you invested? Now that sounds expensive!
Think it's worth having a conversation?
It will initially cost you a little bit of time, but we guarantee you will feel differently about your 'Brian' and you'll see how the values work can shift a whole mindset regardless of the size of your organisation.
